Sailing on Tahiti and her islands
This vacation formula is becoming very popular in Tahiti and Her Islands, both within the lagoons and between the groups of such diversely different islands. It is based upon motor boats, some specializing in deep-sea game fishing and others on private luxury cruises from the larger Society Islands. They offer fishing trips, day trips that include picnics, half-day and sunset-watching trips. Longer cruises can be made on request... Single-hull and catamaran sailboat companies, based in Tahiti, Moorea and principally in the Leeward Islands, offer the choice of chartering with or without a skipper or hostess for a weekend or a few days, but more typically on a weekly basis. Dive cruises, laze-about cruises, discovery or honeymoon cruises - there really is a very wide range of options for you to choose as you cruise in comfort past white, pink and purple sand beaches that fringe the unreal colours of the lagoons of the fabulous Leeward Islands or the sparkling atolls of the Tuamotu. Having your own private yacht is a great alternative. It’s like taking your hotel along with you! Charters boats Marine chartering, adventure is at hand.
Navigation:
is generally calm between the islands, the trade winds blow from the east to the west. From July to September, the maaramu (south wind) can attain a force of 6 to 7 (25-30 knots) provoking a short and choppy sea especially in the
channels between the islands. The north wind, the toerau, can blow as hard as 20 to 30 knots from December to February.
Passes:
Because they are not very deep and are exposed to heavy swells, the passes can be dangerous to cross, especially the southern passes during periods of the maaramu.
Moorings:
The majority of the Society Archipelago islands have deep and sheltered bays. The exterior coral reefs are often bordered with vast expanses of white sand on the lagoon side, are not very deep, and are scattered with coral formations which make heavenly places to drop anchor.
Port of Papeete:
On the northern coast of Tahiti, this is the only international port of Tahiti and her islands. Here one can find administrative offices (immigration, customs, police, hospitals) and technical assistance and refueling as well.
